A Guide to the Sport of Rugby

Because it is an exciting game, many people at present increasingly love the game. Rugby combines football and soccer in that it is a hard-hitting physical game like football, and a game of speed and movement, like soccer.

The ball used in rugby are almost the same as a football in terms of size and shape. Rugby balls are slightly larger than a football. Laces no longer come with the modern version of the rugby ball. It is mandatory to wear a mouthpiece in a rugby game, but it is optional to wear a soft-padded head gear.

The playing field for a rugby game is called the pitch. 100 meters long and 70 meters wide, is the dimensions of a rugby playing field or pitch. Uprights are positioned on every end of the ruby field. The uprights are before the goals area of the team. The minimum depth of the goal area is 10 meters but it is often 22 meters.

Rugby is played by two teams which will be represented on the pitch. Each team consist of fifteen players. Each team is divided into two separate groupings called the pack and the backs. The pack players have jerseys with numbers from one to eight. The large, physical players of the team are placed in the pack group. The jersey’s with numbers from nine to fifteen constitute the backs which is made up of the fastest team players.

Teams’ objective is to score a ‘try’ or a goal. You can achieve a try by touching the ball down inside your opponent’s end zone. Any player can bring the ball to the goal area and make a score. If you make a try, 5 points is awarded to you. Making a try gives you a chance to make a conversion kick. Two points are added to the team score if the conversion kick is good.

You can also score points through a drop goal. A drop goal is equivalent to 3 points. If the ball is kicked through the uprights of the opposing team then you have a drop goal. To make a drop goal the ball should make contact with the ground first before you kick it.

If there are fouls on players, penalty kicks are also granted. Penalty kicks are worth 3 points. The player kicks the ball freely on the site where the foul was committed and behind the 22 meter line.
